The song "Teenage Kicks" was originally recorded by Northern
Irish punk group 'The Undertones' in 1978. This song was
championed by BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. He once said,
'I still play Teenage Kicks to remind myself how a great record
should sound'. In 2004, when John Peel passed away, a mural in tribute to him, featuring the opening line of the song "Teenage Kicks", was graffitied on a Belfast flyover. This is where this
photograph was taken. John Peel’s funeral service ended with his coffin being carried out to the accompaniment of this song. John had written that, apart from his name, all he wanted on
his gravestone were the words, "Teenage dreams, so hard to
beat", the opening lyrics of "Teenage Kicks". A headstone engraved in accordance with his wishes was placed at his grave in 2008.
